Here are a few of our favourites things to do with kids in Reykjavík — a perfect blend of adventure, culture, and play.
Reykjavík Family Park and Zoo
Ideal for younger children, this cosy park brings together farm animals, Icelandic wildlife, and classic fairground rides. Kids can meet sheep, seals, and even reindeer while parents enjoy a relaxed stroll around the park. It’s located in Laugardalur, a lovely green area that’s perfect for a picnic or a break between attractions.
Whales of Iceland Exhibition
This immersive exhibition lets kids step into the world of giants. Life-sized models of whales, soothing lighting, and soundscapes create a peaceful yet awe-inspiring environment. It’s educational, yes — but it’s also magical.
Bonus: it’s indoors, so it’s a great choice on a rainy Reykjavík day.
Árbær Open Air Museum: Step Back in Time
For a hands-on history lesson that feels more like play than study, the Árbær Open Air Museum is a must-visit. This charming museum recreates a traditional Icelandic village with over 20 preserved buildings, including homes, a church, and a farm. Children can explore the “Come and Play!” exhibition, which focuses on children’s culture, toys, and games from the last century. Icelandic Lava Show: A Fiery Family Adventure
For an unforgettable experience that brings Iceland’s volcanic nature to life, the Icelandic Lava Show in Reykjavík is a must-see. It’s the only place in the world where you can safely witness real molten lava flowing indoors. During the 45–55 minutes show, lava is superheated to 1100°C (2000°F) and poured into the showroom, simulating a volcanic eruption. The live host provides engaging commentary, making it both educational and thrilling for the whole family. While the show is family-friendly, it’s best suited for children over 5 years old, as younger kids might find it challenging to stay seated during the presentation.
Tjörnin: A Quack-tastic Experience
Located in the heart of Reykjavík, Tjörnin—affectionately known as “The Pond”—is a serene spot teeming with birdlife. Children will delight in watching ducks, swans, and other waterfowl glide across the water. While feeding the birds has been a popular activity, it’s important to note that city authorities advise against feeding them bread, especially during the summer months, as it can attract seagulls that prey on ducklings. Instead, simply enjoy the natural beauty and perhaps bring along some bird-friendly feed like grains or seeds. The surrounding area also features walking paths and parks, perfect for a family stroll. This is a great plan to do with very young kids.
FlyOver Iceland
For slightly older children (minimum height applies), FlyOver is an unforgettable ride over Iceland’s most spectacular landscapes — without ever leaving the city. This virtual flight uses motion, wind, mist, and scents to give a full sensory journey. It’s thrilling, safe, and surprisingly moving.
Perlan: Where Nature Meets Imagination
Perlan is more than a museum — it’s an experience. Inside this striking glass dome, kids can walk through a real ice cave, learn how glaciers form, and get up close with Icelandic nature in a way that’s hands-on and interactive. The planetarium show is a must-see, and the observation deck offers one of the best panoramic views of the city.
…And of Course, the Local Pools
No visit to Reykjavík with kids is complete without a stop at one of the city’s many geothermal swimming pools. With waterslides, play areas, and warm shallow pools, these are community hubs where local families unwind, and visitors are always welcome. Try Laugardalslaug or Vesturbæjarlaug for a great mix of fun and relaxation. It is a must-do on the list of things to do with kids in Reykjavík.
Despite the doubts it may raise, traveling to Iceland with children is a good idea. At first, the flight is short, only 3 hours from the United Kingdom, about 6 hours from some major cities in the United States. In addition to this, you could go at any time of year because temperatures in Iceland in Winter are not as cold as we usually think. Although the climate is quite moderate, it is best to travel with children to Iceland between May and September.
That said, Iceland is an incredible park open to adventure for young and old all 12 months of the year. In fact, travelling with kids in Reykjavík doesn’t mean giving up on Icelandic adventure — it just means seeing it through their eyes. And with so many engaging and family-friendly experiences, Reykjavík is an easy and inspiring place to explore together.
